 Solution: Let the number be X.

 As per above question.
  

 Four times a number plus 12 is equal to 40.

 EQUATION
4X+12=40
4X=28
X=7

 VERIFICATION

 4(7)+12=40.
Hence the number is 7.
Question: 6 less than twice a number is ten more than the number. Find the number.

 Solution: Let the number be X.

 EQUATION
2X-6=X+10
2X-X=10+6
X=16

 VERIFICATION

 2(16)-6=26.
Hence the number is 7.
